VIDEO - THE RECALL: REFRAMED, November 15, 2022
Racing Horse Productions: THE RECALL: REFRAMED examines the 2018 recall of California Judge Aaron Persky, who lost his judgeship after handing down a sentence deemed too lenient by many in the infamous sexual assault case involving Stanford swimmer Brock Turner. The recall came at the height of the #MeToo movement, and some hailed it as a victory against rape culture, white privilege, and a system stacked against survivors of sexual violence. But there’s more to the story. The film offers competing perspectives and asks the difficult question: Who actually bears the burden when we demand harsher punishment for a privileged white defendant?

And judges are the ones who decide they have tremendous power. We don't know enough about them. So how do we pick the best judges when they're on the ballot? My answer is you can't unless you have sufficient information to know who these people are. And therein lies the problem. There is very little information out there about who these judicial candidates are." - LaDoris Hazzard Cordell

VIDEO - Ketanji Brown Jackson becomes the first Black woman elevated to the Supreme Court, April 7, 2022: “This doesn't take courage. This nomination and voting for her was common sense. And if anyone understands the legal system and how important representational diversity is, it doesn't take courage at all. It's common sense,” said LaDoris Cordell, a former judge, and a former independent police auditor.
“So those who did not vote for her, they expressed themselves quite well with their baseless, race-baiting, and insulting comments and questions to her. And I hope we spend very little time on these individuals who are basically very hypocritical and/or do not have an understanding of how the legal system works, particularly the criminal legal system.”

She questions the roots of the criticism leveled against Jackson. “She went to Harvard undergrad, Harvard Law School, did well, clerked for a U.S. Supreme Court justice and yet there are people saying ‘no, she’s just not good enough.’ There are still people who just can’t accept that we — people of color, women — are qualified,” Cordell said.
VIDEO - KPIX 5 | CBS SF BAY AREA, Family of Erik Salgado Demands Justice After Decision Not To Charge CHP Officers Who Fatally Shot Him, April 5, 2022: “The DA has said, ‘Well, I’m not really clear that that’s what happened, but right now I have nothing else to turn to.’ Why? Because there’s no video,” said LaDoris Cordell, a former judge, and a former independent police auditor.
Cordell says video from body-worn cameras would have taken away any doubt as to whether the shooting was justified. According to the DA, the cameras were not required per CHP policy.
“Had they had cameras on and activated, we wouldn’t be having this conversation, nor would the DA have any question about whether or not pressing charges, filing charges was the right thing to do,” says Cordell.
